Some facts about my one year old: 24lbs (70%), 32 inches (92%) with stormy blue eyes & blonde hair
6 teeth - 2 bottom and 4 top
starting to take tentative first steps
drinks whole milk from a sippy and only drinks a bottle before bed (our night routine is so great that we're procrastinating getting rid of the night bottle)
sleeps through the night - and has been for quite a while now. He's a good sleeper!
loves his blankie - the blue knit blankie he's had since he was a couple months old is still his favorite. It is definitely his security blanket and he won't go to sleep without it.
loves to love - Carter loves love. He hugs his animals multiple times a day. And when we play on the floor he'll come up to me and hug me or lay in my lap for a minute or two. Just like he is loving on this pillow.
loves to share his goodness - ie he loves to share his toys, snacks, animals, etc with us. If he loves something he wants us to try it and love it too. This has to be one of my most favorite things about him! He also really wants to share with the dogs but they're not too sure about this yet.
snuggler - our night routine is ah.maaazzz.ing. We give him a small bottle, then we read some books. After we're done reading books I (or Joe) pick Carter up, put his blankie on my shoulder and hold him up high with his knees into my stomach and his butt out. Then he snuggles his head onto my left shoulder and his blankie, put his right hand up holding his blanket by his face, and puts his left arm straight down, under my arm that is rubbing his back. Then we sway back and forth a bit and I (or Joe) tell him how much I love him, talk about our day or our next plans, etc. Then we lay him down, turn on Charlie (the seahorse that plays music and has a belly the lights up) and tell him goodnight. I love this routine. I love love love the way he snuggles in a rests his head on my shoulder. Joe and I both love this new routine.
birds & outside - Carter loves to be outside and if he hears a bird he looks around to find it. Reminds me of my bro Jason and how he really liked "birdies" when he was little.
picker upper - Carter has started to put things away! yeay! He may look like his dad but he's not taking after him in all aspects :) For example, today he took his tooth brush and elephant night light off the little table we have by his chair. Then he grabbed them one by one and put them back up where they came from. He also took all the pot covers out of the drawer today and then started to put them away. So cute to watch! And I love that he is picking up. One less thing for me to pick up!
nicknames - Cartbo, Carterboo, Bug, and Buggy are used most frequently.
talking - a little while back Carter was saying "hi baaee" (hi babe) but he's stopped doing this. He says Dada and Nana all the time. Not many Mama's. If he's saying anything else I haven't figured it out yet.
waving - Carter waves now and when he's done waving he sticks his arm straight out so that I can chomp his hand with my hand. That seems to be his favorite part of waving.
food - Carter's current favorites: yogurt melts, string cheese, been & cheese quesadilla, spaghetti, turkey manicotti, stringy beef, sweet potato fries, ranch burgers, fruit/veggie smoothie pouches, waffles, crackers, pears, peaches, peas, green beans, carrots, corn, squash, bananas, strawberries. Carter is also learning to eat with a fork. I load it and he feeds it to himself.
strangers - he doesn't have much stranger anxiety but he definitely knows who he likes and who he doesn't. He doesn't give out smiles freely like he used to. Now only certain people (strangers) can get a smile out of him. I'm definitely not pushing him to smile, wave, say hi to strangers. If he doesn't want to smile at them that's his choice. One person he still really likes is Dr McGarey. He crawls over to her, pulls up on her legs, and wants her to hold him. He doesn't do this with anyone else. In fact we saw a different doctor the other day (Dr McGarey wasn't in) and Carter wasn't at all impressed with the new doctor. He was a younger guy and he was friendly but Carter wasn't sure about him at all! He had the pout/I'm not sure if I'm going to cry face on the whole time. But then on the way out of the dr office, in the elevator, was an older man who simply smiled at Carter and Carter smiled back. It's definitely interesting to see how he reacts to people.
We had to wait a while for our dr appointment..... Carter loves to push around the dr stool.
Here's a pic of Carter and his favorite doctor:
I love it when he does this
Up next, and hopefully soon, Carter's birthday weekend trip to Phoenix and the zoo. We had an AMAZING time. I have lots of pics to go through and hope to get them up in the next couple days.
Carter took his first step! He was playing in our hotel room on Saturday afternoon and was looking out the patio door. He turned around and saw the chair a couple feet away and went for it! Poor Joe was in the bathroom for 2 seconds and missed it.
Lots of pics and info about Carter's birthday weekend to come very soon! We had a GREAT time and really soaked up the mini family vacation that we all desperately needed.
Cartboo is 1! 1 year, 20 hours, and 10 minutes old right this very second. I have so many emotions running through my head that I cannot even attempt to write a post. My most favorite dude is one. Where did the last year go?! I made it almost all day without breaking down. I had 3 (singing, snuggling and kissing goodnight got me.... my dude is ONE!)
Carterboo, your mama loves you like mad. One year ago today you were born and my life changed in the most amazing way. I love you up to the sky and down to the pipes.
Last year, at this very moment, Joe and I were at Flagstaff Medical Center in the beginning stages of my failed induction. In fact we were probably walking the halls right now trying to get things started. We were probably talking about how it is so crazy that we're about to have a baby and become a little family of three. Today I woke up and looked at the clock. 6:30 (thank you Carter for sleeping in!) We were at the hospital at 6:30am and Carter was still in my belly. It is so bizarre, pregnancy is. I was pregnant for 9 months (10 if you want to get technical) I was induced, I had crazy contractions, I was in labor for 11 hours, pushed for 4 hours, and had a c section. But it still seems so surreal. I remember sitting in the exact spot I am now, rocking in the computer chair and telling Joe when to "hit S" so start timing my contractions. We timed my contractions on the internet. I remember googling "contraction timer" in the midst of a contraction so we didn't have to write it down. Haa.
This morning, on the eve of Carter's first birthday, I find myself reflecting on the past year and looking forward. I expected to be a little emotional with my dude turning one. Has the past year gone fast? Yes! Will I miss the times that Carter slept in my arms for hours or the way his tiny baby body snuggled perfectly into mine? Yes and yes. Will I miss our naps on the couch? Yes. Yes I will miss those times. I very much enjoyed having a tiny tiny baby to snuggle all day long. :) But the best part is that I know that I took full advantage of those times. When I look back I don't have a single regret. I did what felt right at that time, soaked it in, and enjoyed it. When I look at Carter I will always remember those great times. I enjoyed it all very much but I know what lies ahead of us will be just as much fun and I'll enjoy it just as much.
On the eve of our little dude's first birthday all I see are possibilities. His little personality is blooming and he blows me away each and every single day with something funny he does or a new thing he learns. Becoming a mama has been an experience beyond my wildest dreams. Becoming a little family of three has been beyond my wildest dreams. I wouldn't change any of it for the world. When our little bug sees me or his dada and he smiles his little smushed up face smile at us I know that what lies ahead is going to be just as amazing.
definitely not my favorite picture of me, but this was me a year ago today. note to self, don't induldge in as much ice cream next time around!
Carter opened his birthday presents this weekend. I have lots of pictures but couldn't resist posting these Scout love pictures now. Carter opened Scout, for the second time, and loved him just as much! He grabbed him out and gave him some hugs. When Scout talks Carter gets this super big smushed up nose smile and hugs Scout. Pretty cute! After the smile he looks at me like "did you hear that?!" So cute. This morning I woke up singing one of Scout's songs: "Me and my friend, Carter, we like to do everything together!"
If you haven't read below we've decided to take Carter to a pediatric ophthalmologist. We will be seeing the dr our pediatrician recommends on April 15th at 10:30.
We're headed to Sedona tomorrow for a little park fun and a picnic. Recent pictures coming soon I promise! For now the flickr lottery.
Today I was walking with our neighbor and we were talking about Carter's eye surgery. She told her husband, who is a doctor, about it and he said he'd bring his kid to Phoenix to the pediatric ophthalmologist. This had me second guessing everything again. Our initial reaction was to go to Phoenix to the pediatric ophthalmologist. The thing that had us second guessing that was the fact that there is NOTHING in between Phoenix and Flagstaff. If something happened or Carter had a reaction to coming out of anesthesia there is literally nothing in between.
Hearing that her doctor husband would go to the ped eye surgeon had me racking my brain trying to figure out what was the best for Carter.
I called my cousin Geoff. He's a surgeon and he's family. I should have called him in the first place as his opinion and advice I trust completely. He was on a ski trip so we didn't get to talk much but his opinion was crystal clear. No matter what, 100%, bring Carter to the pediatric ophthalmologist.
So that's our new plan. I'm going to get a referral to a pediatric ophthalmologist and go from there. We're going to spend the night after the surgery in Phoenix just to be safe. In case something happens I want to be close to the doctor that performs the surgery and all of the resources a big city like Phoenix has.
We'll take as many prayers, positive vibes, or whatever your thing is, as we can get. I'm very much looking forward to Carter's eye getting better and him not having to deal with runny and gunky eyes - especially since it has been worse lately. But I am not looking forward to the surgery. I've had dreams about it. I use the word dream loosely there. They weren't the swimming dolphins and sunny sky kinds of dreams. So yeah, thoughts, prayers, good vibes, whatever you pray to or believe in, we'll take it!
Carter got this new puppy, Scout, from Uncle Jason for his first birthday. When Scout talks to Carter he get this cute little smile and then looks at me. If you pay attention you can tell he is smiling when all you see is Carter's profile - his little cheeks go up!
This is what it looks like when Carter tastes toes or shoes.
I love it when he does this. He'll be playing then notice me watching and crawl over to say hi.
Crawled up the whole set of stairs yesterday - for the first time. He normally didn't have much interest in the stairs and I wasn't about to push it, but last night he was playing with Joe and went up each and every stair!
Carter isn't a copier at all and we've been trying to get him to wave for a long time. He finally did it today, but when he saw me looking he stopped. I have a feeling this kid has streak of defiant in him!
He is standing on his own a lot now and tried to take a couple steps yesterday. Walking might not be too far off!
Our awesome pediatrician's office called the eye doctor and got us a consult for 1025am on Monday the 21st. Yeay! I love our pediatrician's office. I called to talk to a nurse about eye meds and she called me back two times - 1) because she had an idea for us (a new eye drop) and 2) to see if I was ok with her calling to see if she could get us in for a consult sooner. Yes! I am ok with that!
Pictures.... or the lack there of. I seem to be on a picture taking hiatus. There are only so many pictures one can take of Carter playing in his room with his toys. We are really looking forward to moving and some new scenery. Even if it will be 120 degrees when we move back. We'll do lots of swimming I'm sure. There will also be lots of pictures coming from Cartboo's first birthday - next week! - and our mini vacation to Phoenix. Plus we're planning to hike in Sedona one of these weekends. I think I speak for all of us when I say we're ready to get out of this town and back to our house and a town with lots to do.
So for today's post we'll play the flickr draw. Pick a random flickr page (where I host the pictures) and pick an image.
6 weeks old
his first smile I got on camera - 2 months old
one of his first time sleeping on his belly - 2.5 months old
one of his first times in a cloth diaper - which still fits him today! - 3 months old
First, lets start with the date. It is March 11, 2011. This morning, over breakfast, Joe says "this time last year you were like 'Get this baby out!'" Carter thought that was pretty funny and sat smiling in his high chair. Goofy dude. Anyway, my point is that Carter turns ONE in less than 2 weeks. HOLY. SMOKES.
Now on to my real point of this post. At 11 months Carter is 32 inches tall, 24lbs and handsome as ever! He has turned into even more of a lover and snuggler. Which I LOVE! Before naps and bed I hold him and we talk about our day or what we did, etc and he snuggles in and lays his head on my shoulder/into my neck and rests there. Sometimes with his eyes closed, sometimes open. He puts one hand up by his face to hold onto his blanket and he likes to stretch the other arm out straight against his side. Bonus points if he can stick that arm under my arm that is rubbing his back. I love love love our new little routine. I read somewhere about ending your day talking about the positive things of that day and I really like that. Ending on a positive no matter what happened. Although Carter has no idea what I'm talking about, me whispering to him totally gets him... relaxed? I'm not sure but the whispering totally makes him snuggle in and lets me love on him.
Speaking of all this loving, he still loves to give kisses and hugs too. He kisses his animals all the time and if Joe or I hug one of his animals he crawls over to us and hugs the animal too! One of my other most favorite things is when he is playing he'll look over at me and if the mood strikes him he crawls over to me super fast, with a smile on his face, and either kisses me or puts his head into my shoulder for a hug. LOVE!
Teeth. Carter now has 5 teeth. Bottom middle two, top middle two, and the top tooth next to the middle. Whatever that tooth is called! He is working on the left top tooth as well.
Carter also has his first ear infection. His eye had been worse the past week so I brought him into the doctor to discuss our next steps and to get some medicine for his eye. Turned out he had an ear infection too! Apparently an ear infection can also cause and eye infection and that was why his eye was so much worse. Poor guy! I had no clue he had an ear infection. Teething, eye infection and an ear infection. Yet he was still a mostly happy guy. Carter started some meds Monday and definitely seems to be back to his totally happy self. He's not a fan of the medicine though!
Regarding his clogged tear duct it looks like surgery is inevitable. We have a consult on March 30th - the soonest we could get in - and we'll go from there. We're also on the cancellation list in case something opens up. I'm hoping we get in for the consult before the 30th as everything I've read online says that the surgery has a greater success rate when it is done right at 12 months. We can't book the surgery before the consult so I'm hoping they aren't booked too far out.
To say I'm nervous about the surgery would be totally accurate and probably an understatement. They assure me it is an easy procedure.... but that's my dude we're talking about.
However the good news is that we don't have to go to Phoenix to have the surgery done. Our pediatrician's husband is an eye surgeon and has performed this surgery on kids hundreds of times. I'm very glad we can have this done close to home and not have to drive 2.5 hours before and after the surgery. Especially since there isn't much in between Phoenix and Flagstaff. I'm glad we'll be close to home and close to our pediatrician's, Dr McGarey's, watchful eye.
Speaking of Phoenix and turning one we have some fun stuff planned for Carter's first birthday. Joe has company meetings, in Phoenix, the morning of Carter's birthday so he's taking off the day before and we're heading to Phoenix. We plan to get Carter's hair cut (!), go to the zoo, play at the park, go out do dinner, etc. The possibilities are endless in Phoenix! Joe was researching the zoo and found out that the Phoenix zoo is rated in the top five for kid friendly zoos.
We're staying at the resort I used to work at - the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass. http://www.wildhorsepassresort.com Pretty excited to stay there as they have amazing landscaping and some great backdrops for pictures.
Some news regarding my other favorite dude... Joe got a promotion! Yeay! His hard work is paying off and being recognized. We're so proud of him! Plus it came at the most perfect time - after 3 days of complete anger and frustration with our house situation in MN. But I'm not even going to get into that as I decided I'm done wasting my time and energy on anger. I have much more important things to focus my energy on every day.
Since a post is worthless without pictures here is one of my favorites of me and my other favorite dude. And one of my favorites of my dude.
Oh and one quick funny story. While we were at the doctor's office Carter was crawling around on the floor while Dr McGarey and I talked. Carter crawled over to Dr McGarey's feet, touched her shoe, then got into a push up position and went down to taste her shoe. It was beyond funny! He left a nice wet mart on her leather shoe. Dr McGarey, being as great as she always is, laughs and goes "You know, kids that grow up on farms and playing outside have a lot less asthma, allergies, sicknesses etc because they are always putting things in their mouths and become resistant to a lot of junk." Carter looked up at her for a brief second and then went back down to taste her shoe again! Goofy dude! He was also standing and pulling on Dr McGarey's pant leg for her to pick him up. She obliged and he flirted like mad with her. We're definitely going to miss her when we move!
Ok this post is really scattered and rambly. Adios! One more picture - I was picking random pages from my flickr account and posting my fave from that page of results. Look what I found! Carter when he was a tiny tiny babe.
I have to admit that I view the blog quite frequently. I like looking at the pictures. While I like the vacation picture slideshow I don't like that I can't just look at the pictures. So here are a few of them.
